Upper and Lower North Teign: Belive the hype

Sorry, Slightly dull post today. I took my camera, but forgot my Peli case to put the camera in, and I didn't have a good dry bag to put my camera phone in!

I was about to head off for a River Dart Topwave/Loop play session, when I got a phone call from Ewart. Mitch was Letting Roger and Him out to play for the day (cheers Mitch!) Did I fancy joining them on the Teign. Thats pretty hard I thought to myself, but what the hell, You got to be init to win it!

When we got to the take out we tried to check the river gauge, as described in the guide book. We stood on the bridge, but we couldn't see any boulders to mark whether it was high enough, so there was more than enough water. So we got kitted up and drove up in search of the put in. On the way up I tried to find out what the the guide book had to say about the river. Roger casually told me "Oh it's just bouldery Grade 4".

We thought about putting in to just do the Lower North Teign, but decided to bash on up a bit further. But we wimped out on the high put in, and found a suitable parking spot, and dragged our boats down into the valley in search of water.

What greeted us at the bottom was lots of water and lots of trees! We managed to get on and paddle a bit, but very soon we were off again, dodging trees. Back on again, and almost immediatly off again! After more bashing through the under growth, wading through bogs and marshes we managed to get back on again. But once more it was short lived. So we kind of gave up, dragged our boats back up hill, hacking our way through more jungle like under growth, over walls, through more bogs, untill we finally found a real foot path! Eventually we made it back down to the put in of the Lower North Tegin.

What greeted us this time was lots more water, lots of big boulders, and less trees in the river and on the banks. So we set to it. After a few grade 4ish bouldery rapdis we found ourselves looking at some really steep drops, some big boulders and some tight lines. Some of it went, some of it still had trees in it and some of it was run somewhat blind, with Ewart saying, "It's good, I can see an eddy!". When we finally got to the weir at Gidleigh House, Roger was amazed to see how much water was going over the lip of the weir. In Pictures on the UK Rivers Guide Roger had seen the weir with barely a quater of the amount of water we had at the moment!

Eventually we found ourselves in the grounds of Gidleigh House Hotel. The gradient eased right back and we casually bobed our way back down to the take out.

It was only when we were off loading our boats back at work again, that roger let on that the Guide book doesn't describe it as Grade 4 bouldery rapids, but grade 4/5 and continous 5 in big water. The Git!. I was slightly relived though, at least it made me feel good about being scared whitless for half of the run!

The river lived up to the hype I think, steep hard whitewater, but somewhat ruined by too many trees in the water, and too many evil jungle bashing portages. But if your in search of a real adventure then it could be the one for you!

Dawn Mission at the Pots

With a reasonable amount of rain about this week, the pots has been running at a good level all week. So we decided to go for a pre-work dawn mission.

To say it was cold was a bit of an under-statement! We all needed a bit of motivation to finally climb into wet thermals, and still dripping kit. But we got there eventually.

Ewart ripped it up, Jemma got stuck straight into the pit and I tried to surf the wave without getting a pasting in the pit!

I think this picture sums it up. Me about to get on. It's early, it's really cold, my kit is still wet from yesterday, and I don't like the pots. Bring it on!!!!

YAK Exe Decent 2006. Mill on the Exe

Well after the Night time freestyle action, I thought I'd pop down the Mill on the Exe again. This time in the day light to watch the YAK Exe Decent in action.

The Exe Decent starts in Tiverton, and competitors paddle 19 Miles to Exeter. During the 19 miles are a number of wiers and minor rapids.

I didn't hang around too long, because it was pretty chilly out on the river bank. But I did manage to snap off a few quick pictures. Better than some of the paddlers I saw though, one K2 managed to snap itself in half, running the main line on the bottom step of the weir, and another K2 that managed to snap the nose off their boat, running the river left line into the play hole.

The river level had dropped off a bit from Saturdays level, but there was still enough water to make some of the weirs quite tricky.

Congratulations to all the competitors who took part, your either better or madder than me, I'm not sure which!!

YAK, AS Watersports eXe freestyle competition

Saturday night saw the finest free-stylers and whitewater junkies in the SW and beyond gathered at Mill on the Exe in the heart of Exeter, ready for this years YAK, AS Watersports Boater eXe event. However due to high water levels, the event had to be hastily re-branded as a Free-style event.
The event has always taken place the night before the YAK Exe Decent, under flood lights. It was always supposed to be a freestyle event, but low water levels in previous years have turned it into a highly succesful boater cross race. This year though, the Gods of rain were smilling on us, and the river level proved perfect for a freestyle event.

So with flood lights blazing, and the sound system pumping, paddlers and spectators started to turn up. We had hoped for a turn-out of around 40, but we didn't quite get that far, just 20 competitors. Three local paddlers were persuaded to judge for us, and I somehow ended up on the PA.
We decided to go for an 'old skool' subjective judging system, with paddlers competeing in heats of 4 and getting a 10min slot to strut there stuff in the hole.

The Top two paddlers from each heat went through to a semi final, and then the top two paddlers from each semi final went on to a grand final. The judges had a great laugh, and were very laid back about moves and scoring. They were definatly looking for comedy moves and sillyness as well as technical moves. They even scored Ewarts' "super-clean-wash-offs" for consistantly blowing off the wave without laying down any tricks!!

With the wheat slowly being seperated from the chaff, we saw more comedy, more sillyness and more hard core technical moves. Going through to the grand final were:

Rob Hinds, Exeter Schools' finest, mixed it up right from the word go, banging in some huge loops, playing guitar with his paddles, and getting some beatings!

James Hawker, international class surf boat supremo, ripped it up, consistanly cartwheeling, looping, and wowing the crowds with some incredible sidekicks.

Sam Anderson, Sam proved his skills, laying down lots of loops, going for mountains of phonix monkeys, cross deck cartwheels and even some hand surfing!

Tom Bailey, international boat slag, despite paddling other peoples boats and changing boats between heats, he still managed to throw a good range of blunts, cartwheels and even a paddle-free loop!

We even managed to coax two Ladies to compete, AS Watersports' own Jemma Lane, and Sian (sorry I have no idea what your surname is!!) It was a shame not to see more Ladies on the water, there were plenty of other female paddlers on the bank, but not on the water. You Know who you are, next time we want to see you in action!!

The Final results from the judges were;

Men

1st Sam Anderson

2nd Rob Hinds

3rd James Hawker

4th Tom Bailey

Ladies

1st Sian

2nd Jemma Lane

Can I post pictures??!

Well here goes, lets see if I can manage to upload some pictures!

Well it's taken about four attempts but I got there at last. Me over cooking the little double at Exeter BMX track!

Ewart, of DJredbelly.blogspot.com fame, stylin' it at the now non existent shute wood jumps.

Tom "the boat wrecker" putting it on edge and aiming for the shoulder. The mighty flowerpots play hole, River Exe, Exeter. (it's bad, but not as bad as hurley!)

Me again, cruising a small summer wave, at my favourite out-of-the-way Devon break.

Finally one to try and show that I can be "arty" behind a camera too!

Well thats your starter for ten, for now. It's taken me ages to upload this lot, but I think I know how to make it faster next time!

Laters,

gotta start some-where!

Go on, try it, all your mates are doin' it!

Thought I might as well join in the fun, so here goes. I don't really know where to start, but I've got to start some-where.
Check back soon, and hopefully I'll have put up loads of pictures and maybe even some videos.

laters,
